Medical Surgical Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Portland, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
- Start Day: Tuesdays
- Patient Ratios: 1:1, 1:3, or 1:4
- Unit: Surgical Oncology
- Floats: May float within Acute Care/Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) as needed
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month
- On-call: Not required
- Locals Accepted: Yes
- Pending License Accepted: Yes, if application submitted and received by licensing board (qualifies for 90-day license exemption)
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year of medical oncology experience required
- Epic charting experience preferred but not required
- Experience with care of patients diagnosed with GI cancers (pancreatic, colon, liver, esophageal), gynecological, thyroid, ENT, thoracic cancers, sarcoma, leukemia/lymphoma, and end-of-life care
- Skilled in managing special equipment such as chest tubes, tracheostomies, epidurals, PCA pumps, feeding tubes, JP/blake drains, suction, central lines (ports, hepatic pump, PICC, groshong), ostomy care, and wound vacs
- Familiarity with surgical procedures including Whipple, liver resection, hepatic arterial infusion pump, esophagectomy, VATS, laryngectomy, TORS, TAH/BSO, colectomy, pain management, and chemotherapy administration
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Oregon
- Minimum of 1 year of oncology experience, including surgical oncology experience
- Oncology experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Facility & Work Environment
- Type: Short-Term Acute Care
- Designations: Magnet recognized, Teaching hospital, Level I Trauma Center
- Charting system: Epic
- Parking: $16 daily pass (8 AM - 5 PM), public transportation encouraged
- Scrub color: Any color allowed (no prints)
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Valid government-issued photo ID required on first day
- Background check (including education and work history verification) must be completed within 6 months prior to start
- Drug screen: Negative 10-panel including methamphetamines within 3 months prior to start, lab-based through SAMHSA certified lab
- Immunizations/vaccinations required or signed declinations:
- Tdap (preferred over TD)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (immune titer or 2 vaccines)
- Hepatitis B (full series or immune titer)
- Varicella (immune titer or 2 vaccines)
- Seasonal Flu vaccine or signed declination (deadline 12/01/2025)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months prior to start, plus TB questionnaire
- Fit mask testing required within 1 year prior to start (N95 or equivalent)
- Completion of facility-specific training modules prior to start (e.g., Compass modules for RNs)
- Professional appearance policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start
- Two references from managers or supervisors within last 24 months required (charge RN references not accepted unless direct supervisor)
- Employment application must include at least 7 years of work history with city and state for each position
Additional Notes
- First-time travel nurses accepted
- Maximum approved time off (RTO) during contract: 5 days for 13-week assignment; requests for more require contract extension
- Candidates must be fully available for compliance needs up until start date
- Facility requires completion of various competency exams and certifications as applicable
- Candidates may be required to complete additional facility-specific documents and attestations before starting
