Registered Nurse - Emergency Room (ER)

Unit Details

• Patient Ratios: 1:4
• Patient Population: Neonates to Geriatrics
• Unit Systems: Cerner, Pyxis
• Shift: Mids with Variable Start Times
• Weekend Requirement: Every Other Weekend
• Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: 1 request, must be submitted initially

Required Qualifications

• Specialty: Registered Nurse - ER
• Years of Experience Required: 3 years minimum, 5 years preferred (use 5 years as requirement)
• First-time travelers accepted
• Certifications Required:

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BCLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

• Work Settings:

  • General Emergency Department (Adult/Pediatric combined)

  • Non-Trauma Emergency Department

  • STEMI Certified Facility
  • Stroke Certified Facility

• Cardiac Monitoring and Emergency Response:

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias

• IV Therapy/Phlebotomy:

  • Arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line care/management
  • Phlebotomy
  • Starting IVs, continuous IV sedation, IV vasopressors
  • Medication administration
  • Procedural sedation administration

• Neurological/Psychiatric:

  • CVA (stroke) care
  • ICP (Intracranial Pressure) monitoring
  • Spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury (TBI)

• Pediatrics:

  • Head/spinal cord injury
  • Near drowning care

• Respiratory/Thoracic:

  • CPAP/BiPAP management
  • Interpretation of ABGs (arterial blood gases)
  • Care of ventilated patients

• Shock/Trauma:

  • Gunshot wounds
  • Orthopedic trauma and traumatic amputation

• Professional Topics and Skills:

  • Isolation precautions
  • Triage

Compliance and Requirements

• COVID-19 vaccination required
• Advanced EKG exam required prior to start (passing score 80%, 78% for Peds/PICU)
• Background checks including 7-year history and various federal/state screenings
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
• Drug screening (10 panel) within 1 year of start, updated annually
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months, with additional requirements for positive or allergy cases
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Nov 1 - Apr 30)
• Fit mask testing required prior to start
• Various facility-specific documents and competency validations required prior to start and updated annually (e.g., RN Competency Validation, Confidentiality Agreement, TB Questionnaire)
• Professional references required (2 for travel/allied/per diem acute care; 1 for per diem non-acute care)
