Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Bridgeport, Connecticut
Facility Type: Short term acute care hospital
Level: Level II Trauma Center
Beds: 426 staffed beds
Charting System: EPIC


Position Details

  • Role: Charge RN (must have prior charge experience)
  • Shift: 4x10 hour night shifts (2100-0730)
  • Additional Requirements: Charge duties, weekends, and on-call required
  • Specialty: Operating Room
  • Experience Required: Minimum 5 years in specialty
  • Trauma Experience: Required
  • State License: Connecticut RN license required prior to start
  • Contract Length: 16 weeks

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) - Required for NICU only
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - Required for ER, preferred for Pediatric ER
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (check unit description)

Background Checks & Verifications

  • 7-year criminal background check (must be updated annually)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency for internationally educated RNs
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification within 30 days of start

Competency Exams & Testing

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024 or later, must score 80%)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for specific units such as Telemetry, ICU, ER)

Facility-Specific Training & Documents

Required trainings and attestations include but are not limited to:

  • Stroke Education (not required for pediatric specialties and NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric
  • Preventing Pressure Injury
  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health)
  • New Employee Orientation Module
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap >6 months or updated module)
  • EPIC Testing (optional but highly encouraged for those with EPIC experience)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical Exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum
  • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray documentation
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) titers or vaccinations with booster requirements if low titers
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or positive titer or declination within 1 year
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer with booster requirements if low/equivocal
  • 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Employment History & Compliance

  • 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months of start
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • Attestation of Prior Radiation Exposure required for certain units

Additional Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position.
  • Must have trauma experience and prior charge RN experience.
  • Connecticut RN license must be active prior to start.
  • Night shift with charge responsibilities, weekends, and on-call required.
