Job Opportunity: Step-Down Registered Nurse (PCU)

Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Position: Step-Down RN with 2+ years of recent Step-Down experience required
• Work Hours: 36 hours guaranteed, every other week (EOW) & every other holiday (EOH)
• Scheduling: No blocked scheduling
• Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
• Unit/Patient Population includes:

  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Post heart catheterization
  • Post vascular procedures
  • Respiratory failure (BiPAP / CPAP / Vapotherm)
  • Cardiac dysrhythmias

Unit Procedures / Expectations

• Post-heart catheter care
• TR bands management
• Post-vascular procedure monitoring
• Frequent vital signs and neurovascular checks

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Skills

• Cardiac/Emergency:

  • Cardiac monitoring
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • 12-lead EKG/ECG
• IV/Vascular:

  • IV start and maintenance
  • PICC line management
  • Blood product administration
• Medications:

  • Emergency medications
  • Procedural sedation administration/monitoring
  • Cardiac drip titration
• Neurological:

  • CVA / Acute Stroke management
• Respiratory/Thoracic:

  • BiPAP / CPAP management
  • Assist with chest tube insertion/removal
• Professional Skills:

  • Infection prevention
  • Isolation precautions / PPE
  • Phlebotomy

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for New York
• Minimum 2 years of recent Step-Down nursing experience (higher experience requirement confirmed)
• No explicit prior travel experience required
• Must pass a telemetry assessment (minimum 80%) on cardiac rhythm interpretation on first day of orientation
• Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable

Additional Requirements

• Background checks including SSN trace, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG prior to start
• Primary source verification of RN license (NURSYS verification)
• Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, signed by licensed provider
• Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually
• Immunizations and health screenings:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within last 10 years or declination)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella immunity verification
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination
  • Varicella immunity or vaccination
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season
  • COVID vaccine records or declination
• Drug screening (9 panel) within 30 days of start
• Stroke education: minimum 8 hours annually (NIH Stroke Scale training may count)
• Completion of facility-specific documents and acknowledgements (e.g., Code of Conduct, Patient Abuse Reporting, Confidentiality Agreement, Automated Dispensing Cabinet Security for Pyxis access)
• References: 2 professional references within 3 years
• Skills checklist required

• Medication system: Pyxis automated dispensing cabinet
• Local candidates accepted

This position is ideal for experienced Step-Down RNs comfortable with cardiac and neurological patient care, who meet the certification and competency requirements and are ready for a 13-week travel contract in New York.
