Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Operating Room RN First Assist)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Operating Room RN First Assist
- Unit: 30 Bed Operating Room Unit for Pediatric patients (Newborn to 17 years)
- Shift: 5 shifts per week, 8 hours each (06:45 AM - 5:15 PM)
- Call Requirements: Yes, includes some weekday and weekend on-call duties on a rotating schedule
- Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
- Floating: No floating outside scope of practice
- Block Scheduling: Cannot guarantee block scheduling
- Locals Accepted: No (must be outside 75-mile radius)
- Pending License: Accepted if active before start
Experience & Skills Requirements
- Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years RN experience required
- Prior Travel Experience: Preferred (not explicitly required)
- No First Timers Accepted (travel nurses must have prior travel experience)
- Specialty Skills Required:
- Pediatric General OR
- General OR
- Circulate and Scrub skills
- Preferred Skills: IV Start, robotic experience preferred
- Special Requirements: Experience in pediatric and women's specialty settings preferred
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only, must be current before start
- Additional Certifications (may be required depending on unit):
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- Certifications must be current and cannot be pending or completed onsite
Facility & Work Environment
- Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care
- Special Designations: Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Major teaching hospital
- Charting Systems: Cerner, Accudose, SBAR
- Scrub Color: Bright Blue
- Parking: Free for travelers
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background Checks:
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
- SSN Trace, County, Sex Offender, National Criminal, and International searches (if applicable)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks updated annually
- Licenses:
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
- Drug Testing: Must be within 30 days of start, includes a full panel (Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Cocaine, Opiates, Phencyclidine, Benzodiazepines, Methadone, Propoxyphene)
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 1 year, signed by appropriate medical professional
- Annual fit mask testing (N95 3M models accepted) or PAPR accommodation if needed
- Immunizations and titers required: Tdap, Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
- Annual TB questionnaire for positive TB responders
- Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless approved medical/religious exemption
- COVID-19 vaccination not required (proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted)
Additional Requirements
- References: Minimum 1 reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within the past year
- Skills Checklist: Annual specialty-specific skills checklist required
- Pass/Fail Testing: EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration tests required for nursing candidates
- Orientation: Two-day orientation (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management
- Policies: Candidates must review and acknowledge facility dress code, blood administration policy, math calculation packet, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, and vaccination exemption forms as applicable
- Return to Facility Restrictions: Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked
Important Notes
- Flu vaccine refusal without medical proof is not accepted during flu season
- Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and social security card (or proof of request)
- Candidates must comply with all facility-specific documentation and training requirements prior to start
This position is ideal for experienced pediatric OR nurses with prior travel experience who are comfortable with on-call duties and working in a high-acuity pediatric surgical environment.
