ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Saint Louis, Missouri
Position Overview
- Role: Registered Nurse (RN) - Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
- Weekly Hours: 48 hours (can sign for 36 or 48 hours per week)
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA only
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - AHA only
- National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stroke Certification (annual update required; additional stroke education on-site for Neuro ICU)
- Other Unit-Specific Certifications: May include PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI/MAB, EFM depending on unit assignment (verify per unit)
- Competency Exams:
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required annually (Relias Basic Dysrhythmia or equivalent)
- Unit-specific competency exams required annually
Required Skills & Clinical Competencies
- Medical and Surgical ICU care
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Management of multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
- 12-lead EKG/ECG acquisition
- Central Venous Pressure (CVP) and Pulmonary Artery Line (Swan Ganz) monitoring
- Management of acute and chronic renal failure, including CRRT/dialysis
- Arterial line and central line care/management, PICC line management
- IV therapy: starting and maintaining IVs, continuous IV sedation, titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Blood product administration
- Emergency medication administration
- Stroke and CVA management
- Ventilator and BiPAP management, respiratory failure care, suctioning (ETT, NT)
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Infection prevention and isolation precautions (PPE use)
- Phlebotomy
- Care of surgical wounds with drains and wound vacs

- Acute chest pain, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest

- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

- Pre- and post-operative cardiac, thoracic, abdominal surgeries
- Medicine and neuro-medicine overflow
- Pre- and post-transplant care
- End of life and organ donation care
Equipment Used
- IV pumps with titration capabilities
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)/dialysis machines
- Ventilators and BiPAP machines
- Hemodynamic and invasive monitoring devices
- Defibrillators and crash carts
Licensure Requirements
- Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Missouri
- Pending licenses accepted with appropriate documentation
- Primary source verification required (NURSYS for Missouri licenses)
Background and Compliance Requirements
- Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide and nationwide)
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree
- State-specific searches and registries as applicable
- Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois (not applicable here)
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, including comprehensive drug panel
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask testing (N95 respirators) with annual renewal
- Immunization and health screening including:
- Tdap vaccine or declination
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray with yearly questionnaire
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Required facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene and dress code policies, and orientation modules (approx. 16 hours)
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year of start
- Employment application must be completed and uploaded
- No block scheduling accommodations
- Must comply with vehicle registration requirements if working day shifts (not applicable for night shift)

- Parking: Monthly passes available (contact facility Public Safety for details)
- No on-call duties required
- Floating limited to ICU service line units only
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with strong critical care skills who have completed prior travel contracts and are seeking a night shift travel assignment in a high-acuity, Level I trauma center environment.
