Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Specialty: Registered Nurse

Facility: Pediatric Cardiac ICU (23 beds)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, every other weekend required
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years required
  • Licensure: Indiana RN license and certifications must be current and in hand to submit
  • First Time Travelers: Accepted
  • Locals: Not accepted
  • Staffing Ratios: 1:1 to 1:2
  • Unit Focus: Complex heart patients, VAD patients, heart transplant program
  • Training: PICU RNs accepted and will be trained on CVPICU
  • Skillset Requirements: Telemetry, ventilators
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Additional Notes:
    • Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at IU Health facilities except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).

Required Documents & Certifications

  • Licenses & Certifications:
    • Valid Indiana RN license (primary source verification within 30 days of start)
    • BLS, PALS (AHA only, RQI accepted)
    • ACLS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification as applicable
  • Background Checks:
    • Must include 7 years of residence/work history
    • SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
    • Education verification (highest applicable education)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within 12 months of start
    • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
    • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
    • Unit competency exam
    • Color blind testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent)
  • History & References:
    • Minimum 2 references from recent employment verified within 2 years
    • Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
    • Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually thereafter

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Completion of facility-specific compliance, confidentiality, and policy forms (time sensitive)
  • Orientation safety manual and HIPAA acknowledgement
  • IU Health Look of Assurance packet review and signature prior to start
  • Self-study orientation and testing required for certain IU Health facilities
  • Mandatory RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (not applicable for RN)
  • Proof of valid auto insurance required only for Hospice specialty travelers

Important Notes

  • On-site fit testing is limited and must be approved in advance; PAPR use requires prior facility approval
  • Flu vaccine declinations are not accepted; exemptions must be approved by direct team lead
  • IU Health has strict documentation and compliance requirements that must be completed prior to or at orientation
  • Candidates must be prepared to float between cardiac stepdown and PICU units

This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work in a nationally ranked pediatric cardiac ICU with complex patient care. Candidates must meet all licensure, certification, and compliance requirements to be considered.
