Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg/Telemetry Neuro Unit

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 1830-0700)
Hours per Week: 36 hours

Unit Overview

• Department: Medical-Surgical Neurology, 4th Floor North
• Beds: 25
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
• Patient Types: MedSurg/Telemetry patients including strokes, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery, joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, orthopedic trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
• Mechanical lifts available in every other room
• Multicultural patient population including Spanish, Karen, Burmese speakers
• Focus on hourly rounding, responsiveness, and managing multiple admissions/discharges daily

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Current RN license
• BLS (AHA) certification
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Required Skills & Responsibilities

• Pass a pass/fail open book exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (failure results in termination)
• Ability to titrate drips including heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
• Manage PCA pumps and other common titratable/set rate drips
• Telemetry awareness required; Telemetry techs interpret strips, but RNs should be familiar with telemetry monitoring
• Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
• Work with nurse aides/patient care techs (ratio approx. 1:10-20)
• Floating to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients may be required
• Must be able to manage a busy unit with multiple admissions and discharges daily
• Demonstrate good attendance, teamwork, compassion, and patient-centered care

Scheduling & Work Requirements

• Night shifts: 1830-0700
• Weekend shifts: At least every other weekend, with additional weekends as needed
• Holiday shifts: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
• Travelers will be scheduled; limited block scheduling may be approved

Policies & Additional Information

• Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with a certain health system
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
• Driver’s license required at submission to verify distance compliance
• Preferred: Prior travel experience, but strong candidates without it will be considered
• Dress code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation: 2 days

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Nebraska
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 2 years of MedSurg/Telemetry nursing experience
• MedSurg/Telemetry experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Valid Driver’s License

Note: This position requires strong clinical skills in MedSurg and Telemetry nursing with a focus on neurological patients and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, diverse environment.
