Job Opportunity: ICU Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: South Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Unit: ICU
- Beds: 18 (expanding to 27 by mid-2023)
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: Typically 1:2, occasionally 1:3 (overflow or PCU downgrade)
- Patient population: Adolescent, adult, and geriatric
- Common patient conditions:
- Critically ill with complex, life-threatening conditions
- Sepsis, Acute MI, renal patients, post-vascular procedures
- Strokes, TIA, seizures
- Lumbar drains, ARDS (ventilator management), cardiovascular procedures
- Titration of critical drips (vasopressors, sedation)
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA)
- Preferred: PALS, TNCC (required starting 10/21/2026)
- ICU experience required with at least 2 years of critical care experience
- Experience with CRRT, IABP, and Impella preferred
- Prior travel experience required
- RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., Levophed, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Heparin, Insulin)
Work Schedule & Environment
- Shifts: 6:45 am - 7:15 pm or 6:45 pm - 7:15 am
- Scheduling: Manager sets schedule; block scheduling available, especially for night shift
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Fri-Sat or Sat-Mon)
- Holiday requirement: Rotational with core staff
- No call or standby requirement
Additional Job Details
- Floating: Required to float to Stepdown unit; if not needed there, may float to Med-Surg/Telemetry or care for boarded ICU/Stepdown patients in the Emergency Department
- Floating to Med-Surg is rare; travelers float in rotation, not always first
- No nurse aides on unit
- Hospitalist coverage 24/7; Intensivist coverage not always present
- Respiratory therapists not stationed in ICU but available as needed
- Telemetry present; RNs read strips (no monitor tech)
- Dress code: Solid color scrubs (Navy for RN/LPN), no embroidery or patterns; closed-toed shoes only; specific fleece zip-ups allowed in certain colors
Orientation & Training
- First day: General hospital orientation
- Full day nursing orientation for RNs/LPNs
- Computer training: Half day for CNAs, full day for nurses
- Two 12-hour orientation shifts with preceptor
- Abbreviated Initial Skills Checklist due within 90 days of start date

Schedule could use some work, alternating weekends vs every 4th weekend. The hospital could be cleaner. The equipment works but is limited to two rooms for all patients, inpatient, outpatient, and ER- 2 rooms with 2 portables.
