Registered Nurse (RN) – Surgical Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 1930-0730)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Overview
- Department: Surgical Acute
- Unit Size: 63 beds (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 4-5 patients per RN
- Nights: 5-6 patients per RN
- Patient Types: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical
- Common Care Tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- Respiratory Equipment: CPAP and high flow managed by RT; RNs manage inhalers and troubleshoot but do not manage vents
- Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry with Phillips monitors; monitor techs read strips, RNs do not
- Charge Nurse: 2 charge RNs per shift, do not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Patient Care Techs:
- Days: 7-10 patients per PCT
- Nights: 10-15 patients per PCT
- Duties: Vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, ambulation
Scheduling & Requirements
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travelers float first, only to units matching their experience level; ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
- Orientation:
- 2 shifts with preceptor on unit
- 1 twelve-hour shift for EPIC, professional orientation, and unit educator
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed; scrubs not provided
- Scheduling: Block scheduling considered if approved at contract start; travelers do not self-schedule
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Must pass a comprehensive drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
- Experience: Post-op patient care with strong critical thinking skills and good bedside manner
- Ability to ask for help when needed and work well in a team
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips except Heparin only
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Orientation hours (12 hours) are non-billable and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
- Call off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
