Contract Details
- Length: 13 weeks
- Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
- Facility Type: Operating Room (Main OR with 14 suites)
- Shift Types: 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts; primarily day/evening shifts; no self-scheduling for travelers but block scheduling may be allowed if it meets unit needs
- Orientation: 3 shifts of floor-specific orientation
Specialty & Experience Requirements
- Specialty: OR Certified First Assistant
- Required Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in the specialty
- Travel Experience: Must have completed 2-3 previous travel assignments
- Preferred Experience: Orthopedics and Neurosurgery experience preferred
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (AHA)
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) via NBSTSA
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) via NBSTSA
- Must be a graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Surgical Assistant program
- RN’s require BLS, ACLS, and PALS
- ABSA certifications are NOT accepted
Work Environment & Case Load
- Average Cases: 28 cases per day plus 5 add-ons (including same-day surgery cases)
- Case Types: All surgical cases except open heart; includes neuro spine, total joints, open fractures, general surgery, ENT; vascular cases starting in August
- OR Staffing Ratios: 1:1 for OR First Assistants; typically 2 techs to 1 RN; no aids or housekeeping—techs responsible for room turnover
- EMR System: EPIC
- Charge Nurse: Present 7am - 7pm, may circulate cases if needed
- OR Techs: Available
- Ventilator Support: Yes, RT available 24/7 in-house; RT manages vent patients in OR and PACU
- Pharmacy: 24/7 with Omnicell system
- Tele Monitoring: RN’s not required to interpret strips; anesthesia handles this
Call & On-Call Requirements
- Call Rotation: Weekend and weeknight call rotations required
- Call Shifts:
- 1 x 12-hour shift per week (weeknights)
- 1 x 24-hour call shift per month on weekends (can be split into 2 x 12-hour shifts)
- Call Hours:
- Weeknights: 7pm-7am or 7pm-11pm
- Weekends: 7am-7pm, 7pm-7am, 7pm-11pm, or 7am-7am
- Call Response Time: 20 minutes; if more than 20 minutes away while on call, must stay local
- Holiday Call: Coverage as needed (no guaranteed holidays off)
Additional Information
- Scrubs: Provided for RNs and OR Techs
- Floating: No floating required except occasional float to outpatient surgery center
- Scrubbing: RN scrubbing is a plus but not required
- Licensing: Any license issues must be disclosed at time of submission
- Travel Submission Notes:
- Can only submit to one position at a time across the WVU system
- Driver’s license address must be outside 50 miles from the facility
- Previous permanent candidates must be gone for 2 years before reapplying
- Previous travelers must be gone for 2 years after 1 full year assignment
This position is ideal for experienced OR Certified First Assistants with prior travel assignments, strong orthopedic skills, and the required certifications looking for a 13-week contract in a busy surgical environment with varied cases and call responsibilities.
