Position Overview
- Department: Oncology Acute (19 private beds)
- Specialty: Oncology Acute Care Nursing
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (0700 or 1900 start)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Days: Sat/Sun; Nights: Fri/Sat, as staffing permits)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling with manager coordination; schedule completed in 6-week blocks
- Floating: Included in unit float rotation; float shifts typically 4+ hours
Patient Population & Care
- Patient Types: All cancer types (commonly Lymphoma, Leukemia), hematology, medical patients, radiation oncology, and gynecologic oncology
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: Typically 1:5 (can vary 1:4-5)
- Nights: Typically 1:6 (can vary 1:5-6)
- 1:1 staffing for specific medications/therapies as needed
- Common Drips: Set rate heparin, chemotherapy (e.g., 24-hr Methotrexate bags)
- RN Titration: RNs do not titrate drips; medication adjustments require physician orders
Required Certifications & Experience
- Certifications:
- BLS (AHA)
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate
- Experience:
- IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration
- Handling chemotherapy precautions (PPE)
- Monitoring for medication side effects
Unit Support & Resources
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignments but may occasionally
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs):
- 3 PCTs on day shift (0700-1930)
- 2 PCTs on night shift (1900-0730)
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- Bipap (only if patient’s home regimen)
- Cpap (RT manages; RNs assist as needed)
- Telemetry:
- House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors
- RNs are not required to interpret strips
Orientation & Documentation
- Orientation: 24-36 hours unit-specific orientation
- EMR: Epic Beacon used for documentation
Additional Notes
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Local Placements: Accepts clinicians within 50-mile radius
- Call/Standby: None required
- Scrub Color/Dress Code: No specific scrub color required
