Job Opportunity: Cath Lab Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: East Chicago, Indiana

Job Description

  • Position: Cath Lab RN
  • Required Experience: Minimum 2 years Cath Lab RN experience
  • No first-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience required)
  • Certifications: Indiana or Compact RN license required
  • EPIC electronic health record experience required
  • Return to Office (RTO): 5 days or less
  • Locals allowed (same bedroom as traveler)

Work Schedule

  • Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Options for 5x8 hour shifts (9:30 AM – 6:00 PM) or 4x10 hour shifts (7:30 AM – 6:00 PM) available
  • Call rotation every 6-7 weekends (approximately 2 weekends per 13-week contract)
  • Weekly call day and late day per pay period
  • Call weekend: Friday 6:00 PM to Monday 7:00 AM
  • On-call staff must be within 30 minutes of arrival for acute STEMI cases
  • Team consists of 2 RNs and 1 RT (Respiratory Therapist)
  • RT covers 1 call night per week (9:30 AM – 6:00 PM shift plus evening call 6:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Late shift available: 10:30 AM – 7:00 PM or until last scheduled case is finished
  • Staff typically cover 1 late shift per week
  • Typical work week includes 1 call shift, 1 late shift, and 3 regular shifts (7:30 AM – 4:00 PM)

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years Cath Lab RN experience
  • Prior Travel Experience: Required (no first-time travelers)
  • Licensure: Valid Indiana or Compact RN license (no temporary licenses accepted)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA required, must be current
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA required, must be current
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – as applicable
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – as applicable
    • NIH Stroke Certification – annual requirement for nursing staff
  • Competency Exams:
    • Pass/fail testing on EKG, medication exams, and dysrhythmia/EKG competency required on first day of orientation
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required annually
    • Color Blind testing within 1 year (online acceptable)
    • Unit-specific competency exams must be completed prior to start and updated annually
  • Background Checks:
    • Comprehensive background check within 30 days, updated annually
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required prior to start
  • Health Requirements:
    • Physical exam within 1 year, cleared to work with no restrictions
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Immunity titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella (boosters required if titers low)
    • Drug screening (10 panel) within 3 weeks of start
    • Fit mask test (N95) prior to start, facial hair must comply with OSHA standards
    • COVID-19 vaccination required (2 doses Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose J&J) with medical or religious exemptions allowed
    • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31) or approved exemption
  • Documentation:
    • I9, Driver’s License/State ID, Emergency Contact Form, E-Verify
    • Transcript or diploma of highest education prior to start
    • Employment application including education, training, skills, specialties, licensure, certification, and preferences
    • References: 2 from most recent contract (supervisors or charge nurses acceptable)
  • Orientation:
    • Pass/fail competency exams on first day
    • Completion of facility-specific study guides and acknowledgements (e.g., medication administration, EKG challenge)
    • Annual safety manual acknowledgement

Additional Notes

  • On-call staff must be able to respond within 30 minutes for acute STEMI cases
  • The role involves a mix of regular shifts, call shifts, and late shifts with specific responsibilities for each
  • Candidates should be prepared for a challenging EKG exam requiring detailed rhythm interpretation skills
  • Locals are allowed to apply and will have the same bedroom accommodations as travelers

This position is ideal for experienced Cath Lab RNs with prior travel contract experience who are comfortable with a dynamic schedule including call and late shifts, and who meet the comprehensive certification and health requirements.
