Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Lees Summit, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12-hour shifts (18:45 - 07:15)
- Patient Ratio: 1:5
- Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
- Floating: Regular floating between departments, units, and facilities as needed within scope of practice
- Charge RN Assignments: As needed
- First-time Travelers: Accepted
- On-call: Not required
- Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
- Pending License: Not accepted
- Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days
- Guaranteed Hours: Minimum 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Experience Requirements
- Years of Specialty Experience: Minimum 1 year required, 2 years preferred
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
Certifications Required
- Required: BLS
- Preferred: ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Skills and Competencies Required
- Work Settings: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry
- Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response:
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry monitoring on unit
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
- Genitourinary/Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV Therapy/Phlebotomy:
- Blood product administration
- Central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management
- Starting IVs
- Medications: Heparin protocols, managing cardiac drips (no titration)
- Neurological/Psychiatric: Care for CVA, pre/post neurosurgery patients
- Plastics: Surgical drain care
- Respiratory:
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- Interpretation of ABGs
- Oxygen delivery devices (nasal cannula, face masks)
- Non-invasive airway management
- Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac
Preferred Skills:
- ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown experience
- Accessing ports
- Managing vasoactive drips (no titration), PCA
- Traumatic brain injury care
- Orthopedics: ortho trauma, total joint replacements
- Respiratory: chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, tracheostomy management
Patient Population / Special Requirements
- Intermediate level of care patients including:
- Stroke, heart failure, suicidal ideation, alcohol withdrawal
- Respiratory failure, pneumonia, gastrointestinal bleeding, syncope, TIA, falls
- COVID-19, influenza, C. difficile infections
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- Post-surgical patients requiring higher level monitoring
- Renal failure, cardiac drips, heparin management
Charting System
- Epic
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required
- Professional license primary source verification (Missouri licenses via NURSYS)
- Drug testing within 1 year, must include standard panels and not expire during assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year
- Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tdap (or declination)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency within 12 months
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
- Color blindness testing within 12 months
- Skills checklist within 1 year
- Various facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, hand hygiene, dress code, and latex allergy questionnaire must be completed prior to start
- Orientation modules (~16 hours) required prior to start, unless completed within last 6 months at the same system
- References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
Additional Notes
- Floating between units and departments is expected
- No block scheduling accommodation
- Must adhere to facility policies including fingernail, dress code, and hand hygiene policies
- Candidates must be prepared for weekend shifts and holiday shifts as assigned
This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience, comfortable with night shifts and floating, and able to meet the comprehensive certification and compliance requirements of a large healthcare system.
