Registered Nurse – Stepdown Neuro (Travel/Contract)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work option: 36 or 48-hour shifts available; 13 or 26 week contract options.
- Unit: 48-bed mixed acuity unit specializing in Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Stepdown care with a neurological/neurosurgical focus.
- Patient population includes strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological conditions.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Medical Surgical/Telemetry: 1:5 (days), 1:6 (nights), occasionally 1:7 nights.
- Stepdown: 1:3-4 (days and nights).
- RNs must be prepared to float frequently within scope to meet staffing needs, including to multiple units and potentially a different campus.
- Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some floors have LPNs.
- Drip medication administration required on all floors.
- EPIC electronic charting experience required.
- Facility is 100% nicotine-free.
- Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat).
- Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
- Locals not accepted; candidate must live more than 100 miles from the facility.
- Pending license accepted but must be in hand before start; otherwise, booking will be delayed by six weeks.
- Scrubs: Mandatory Steele gray scrubs (facility branded) required.
- Parking: Permit available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
- First-time travel nurses not accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
- EPIC charting experience required.
- Current RN license for Nebraska (pending license accepted with conditions).
- ACLS, BLS required as applicable per unit.
- NIH Stroke Certification required as applicable.
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology testing required as applicable.
Certifications & Compliance
- Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and federal checks.
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- Education verification required.
- State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required.
- Drug screen within 60 days of start and updated annually.
- Physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+) within 1 year, updated annually.
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap within last 10 years
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if low/equivocal)
- Hepatitis B titer or declination
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal)
- Flu vaccine preferred but not mandatory; documentation or declination required.
- COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemptions or declinations accepted.
- Annual skills checklist required.
- References: 2 work references from past 2 years; if not a current traveler, one must be from most recent employer.
Additional Information
- Travelers are first to float to meet staffing needs.
- RTO (Request Time Off) blackout dates: June 11–22, 2026 (due to College World Series).
- Up to two weeks of RTO permitted; must be submitted with application. Additional requests at manager discretion.
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required.
- Primary source verification and NURSYS verification required prior to start.
- Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here).
- Facility is a teaching hospital with a focus on complex neurological care.
Shift Details
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
- Hours per week: 36
