Overview

• Travel contract in Long Beach, California
• 13-week assignment
• 12-hour evening shifts, 36 hours per week
• Unit: ER
• Fast track: yes, 5 beds
• 26 trauma bays
• No separate psych/seclusion rooms
• 40–160 patients per day
• Level 2 trauma center
• STEMI receiving center
• CVA receiving center
• Adults and pediatrics are seen; critical pediatric patients are sent to a nearby children’s hospital
• No floating

Required Qualifications

• Active BLS
• Active ACLS
• Active PALS
• California RN license
• 2 full years of experience
• 3–5 years of previous ED experience
• Must be available to work 2 of the 3 major holidays

• NIHSS

Clinical / Unit Details

• Ratios: 3:1 and 4:1
• Cerner FirstNet EMR
• Charge nurse present with no patient assignment
• Nurse aides and EMAs support care
• 1 security staff member always in the waiting area
• Every other weekend
• Holidays rotate with core staff
• Navy blue scrubs for RNs
• RN monitor station in the center of the ER “fish bowl” area
• RNs do all lab draws
• No IV team
• RT and Pharmacy are available 24/7
• Vents: yes
• Common patient population includes minor complaints through trauma, with many patients experiencing homelessness and drug abuse
• 55,000 visits per year
• Orientation includes an Education Across Lifespan Trauma module, 1 day with supervisor and 2 with preceptor
