Job Opportunity: MedSurg 4N Neuro Nurse
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Department: Med Surg Neuro - 4th Floor North
- Unit Size: 25 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: MedSurg/Tele patients including strokes, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery, joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
- No respiratory therapy equipment troubleshooting required
Certifications & Requirements
- Required Certifications: BLS (AHA), NIHSS
- RN's must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided) or face termination
- Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Driver’s license required to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Travel experience preferred but strong candidates without it will be considered
- No license or background issues allowed
Clinical Responsibilities
- RN responsibilities include titrating drips such as heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
- Common drips include PCA pumps
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
- Nurse aides/patient care techs available with ratios approximately 1:10-20
- Tele/Monitor techs interpret telemetry strips; RNs should have tele awareness but do not read strips independently
Scheduling & Orientation
- Shifts: 0630-1900 (day), 1830-0700 (night)
- Scheduling: Travelers will be scheduled; limited block scheduling available
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
- Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
- Orientation: 2 days of unit/department-specific orientation

- Scrub Color: Navy Blue for RNs
- Mechanical lifts available in every other room
- Emphasis on hourly rounding and responsiveness
- Unit typically has multiple discharges and admissions daily; success requires good attendance, teamwork, compassion, and patient-centered care
- Patient population is culturally diverse, including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese speakers
- 12-hour night shifts available
