Job Summary
This is a fast-paced, high-acuity Labor and Delivery nursing position on a difficult unit with a very high volume of births (>300 births per month). Double labor assignments are common daily. The unit cares for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care, as well as some patients under 16 weeks on the high-risk maternity unit. The unit also performs scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage procedures.
Shift Details
- 4 x 12-hour shifts per week
- Night shift hours: 18:45 - 07:15
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, minimum 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
- Float requirement: Float as needed on a special maternity care high-risk OB unit
- Call requirement: None
- 48-hour shifts may be offered but are not preferred due to the unit's busyness
Patient Ratios and Volume
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1
- Average 20 births in 24 hours
- 30-40 admissions daily
- 40 visits per day
- 20 rooms
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year required
- Experience on high-volume Labor and Delivery units with more than 300 births per month
- Experience in large, high-volume similar settings
- Certifications required: ACLS (American Heart Association or American Red Cross), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement

- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
Orientation and Unit Details
- Unit orientation: 24 hours
- Unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
- Scrubs provided (blue)
Patient Population and Procedures
- Obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care
- High-risk maternity patients under 16 weeks
- Obstetrical triage for screening and outpatient procedures (antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration)
- Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births
- Rescue cervical cerclage

- This is a difficult, fast-paced unit with high acuity
- Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence
- 48-hour shifts may be offered but may not be realistic for many nurses due to workload
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted
Required Documentation and Compliance (Summary)
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
- Drug testing within 6 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Required immunizations and titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Photo ID and professional license verification
- Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training
- Medication safety training and competency exams as required
- Competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG exam (must pass with 82% or higher)
- Other certifications and training as applicable
