Job Opportunity: Step Down Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Glen Burnie, Maryland
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Shift: Days, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (8:00 AM - 8:30 PM)
Schedule: Every other weekend required; holidays as scheduled
Floating: Required within specialty sister units and lower acuity as needed
On-Call: No pre-scheduled on-call shifts required
Job Description
- Provide nursing care in a Tele Stepdown unit with 27 beds, average census 26 patients
- Patient population includes adults and geriatrics
- Common diagnoses: COPD, gastrointestinal bleeding, end stage renal disease, cardiac dysrhythmias, electrolyte imbalances requiring cardiac monitoring
- Care for chronically ventilator-dependent patients and those receiving peritoneal dialysis
- Special procedures include peritoneal dialysis and bedside thoracentesis
- Use of special equipment such as Viking lift, sit-to-stand devices, EKG, Zoll, and vacuum dressings
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse in the specialty area
- Strong skills and experience preferred, especially for first-time travelers
Required Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Patient Care Environment
- Adult and geriatric patients with complex medical needs
- Telemetry monitoring and cardiac care
- Ventilator and dialysis patient care
Additional Requirements and Compliance
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, education verification, and state-specific exclusions
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start
- Fit testing for respirators within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Immunizations and titers required: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, TB screening, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but documentation or exemption may be requested for tracking purposes
- Two supervisory references within 1 year of start
- Verification of previous 5 years of employment history
Orientation and Facility Specifics
- Completion of required learning modules prior to start
- Facility-specific documents and instructions provided before start date
- Photo for badge required (passport-style with solid background)
- Compliance with facility dress code and confidentiality agreements
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Maryland
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including within the last year
- Minimum 2 years of Med-Surg/Telemetry (step-down) RN experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- National Tech Certification Verification
- State License 1 Verification
- NURSYS Verification (RN, LPN/LVN, AP)
Notes
- Floating within related units and lower acuity areas is expected
- Weekend and holiday shifts are part of the schedule
- No pre-scheduled on-call shifts required
