Travel Registered Nurse (Ortho-Telemetry)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Schedule: 3x12 or 4x12 hour night shifts (7 PM - 7 AM), weekdays, every other weekend, with floating as needed
- Unit: 39 beds, mixed inpatient and observation (adult and geriatric populations)
- Patient types: Cardiac (Acute MI, unstable angina, CHF, arrhythmias), CVA surgical patients, post cardiac cath/angiogram/PTCA
- Procedures: Cardioversion, TEE, thoracentesis, bone marrow biopsy, chest tube insertion, central line insertion, paracentesis (preferred but not required)
- Required medication drip experience: heparin, cardizem, amiodarone, dobutamine, dopamine, nitro
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: typically 5:1; may occasionally float to cover LPN patients
- Orientation/start date held every other week on Thursday
- Guaranteed 36 hours per week
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia
- Minimum 2 years of orthopedics experience, including within the last year
- Telemetry experience
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- IV start proficiency
- Proficiency in heparin, cardizem, amiodarone, dobutamine, dopamine, and nitro drips
Schedule & Work Conditions
- Night shifts only (7 PM - 7 AM)
- Every other weekend required
- Holiday time-off requests limited to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays
- Floating to other units as needed within scope
- 100-mile radius rule for travel
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Adult and geriatric patients
- Cardiac telemetry and orthopedic patients
- Observation unit with high patient turnover (average stay 36 hours or less)
- Level IV Trauma Center, major teaching hospital
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, signed by appropriate provider, confirming good health and no limitations
- Negative TB test within 3 months or chest X-ray if positive TB history
- Required vaccinations or approved exemptions:
- Tdap (mandatory, no declinations accepted)
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption (strict deadline compliance)
- COVID-19 vaccination not mandatory; proof or declination accepted
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B immunization or titers required
- Annual fit mask testing (N95) required; accommodations available if needed
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel
- Background checks including criminal, sex offender, and federal exclusions
Additional Notes
- Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent date worked
- Flu shot refusal without medical proof disqualifies candidate
- Candidate must complete facility-specific orientation and training modules prior to start
- References: 1 reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within the last year
- Pass/fail testing and competency exams required before starting assignment
This position is ideal for experienced RNs with cardiac telemetry and orthopedic skills who are comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced acute care setting.
