ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Pasadena, California
Contract Length: 8 weeks
Shift: Nights, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (3 shifts of 12 hours per week, total 36 hours/week)
Work Schedule: Includes weekends and holidays


Job Description

  • ICU position requiring experience in Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) with mixed patient populations including neurological, solid organ, and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) patients.
  • Candidate must have formal ICU training beyond just hands-on orientation to CCU and sepsis care, with experience extending beyond COVID-related cases.
  • May float up to 50% of the time to other units such as DOU/PCU, Telemetry, and ER Hold.
  • Patient ratios can be up to 1:4.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), including experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Certifications & Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (annual).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (annual) for Telemetry, DOU, ICU, ER, PACU, IR, Endo, Cardiac Cath RNs.
  • Core competencies Part I, II, and III (annual).

Health & Compliance Requirements (Must be completed within 2 business days of contract signing)

  • Physical exam or statement of health within 1 year of start date.
  • Fit mask test (annual), specific mask types required for patient care areas.
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (annual)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (titer or 2 series vaccinations)
    • Varicella (titer or 2 series vaccinations)
    • Hepatitis B immunity or declination
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of assignment, updated annually.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required for current flu season (religious/medical exemptions accepted with mask requirement).
  • COVID vaccination: Must have initial doses of Pfizer/Moderna or single dose J&J; booster preferred but not required; no exemptions allowed.

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required (supervisor level or above preferred).
  • Employment history covering 7 years with no gaps over 30 days.
  • Current skills checklist within 12 months, annual renewal required. For Labor & Delivery RNs, skills checklist must include epidural catheter notation.
  • Facility-specific documents such as photo for badge, TB screening questionnaire, and meal waiver must be completed prior to start.

Notes

  • Manager does not conduct interviews; resume must clearly demonstrate required ICU experience.
  • Floating assignments may include telemetry and emergency hold units.
  • Patient care ratios may be as high as 1 nurse to 4 patients.
