Job Opportunity: Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care in a Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown unit.
  • Patient diagnoses include cardiac defects (medical and surgical).
  • Care involves managing tracheostomies, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, post-operative catheterizations, post-CTICU care, inotropes, and heart and lung transplant patients.
  • Schedule: Every other weekend off.
  • Shift rotation: Day and night shifts rotate every 6 weeks.
  • Shift hours: 12-hour shifts (Day: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM; Night: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM).
  • Weekly hours: 48 hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Ohio RN license in hand.
  • Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown nursing experience.
  • Two professional references required at time of submission; one must be from a manager or supervisor (Charge RN acceptable). Peer references are not accepted.
  • Must have a current government-issued photo ID matching legal name on RN license and certifications.
  • Required certifications (AHA only; name on certification must exactly match legal name and RN license):
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
    • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)
  • Must pass medication/pharmacology competency exam and other applicable competency exams.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including 7-year county search, education verification, and international background check if applicable.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Ohio-specific searches required within 30 days: Nurse Aide Registry, Inmate Registry, Medicaid Exclusion, and Abuse Registry.
  • Fingerprinting (OH BCI/FBI) required within 60 days of start and must be updated for each new contract. Fingerprints must be completed within 24-48 hours of signing contract.
  • Education verification through National Student Clearinghouse or in-house verification if school is not listed.
  • Sex offender search required within 30 days of start.

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 60 days prior to start.
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • TDAP vaccine within last 10 years (no titer substitution).
    • TB testing: Two PPDs or IGRA (QGOLD/TSPOT) within 12 months; additional requirements if positive.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no religious exemptions accepted.
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required.
    • Hepatitis B: Declination, completed vaccine series, or positive titer required.
    • Flu vaccine required annually between October 31 and May 31; medical/religious exemptions require facility approval and mask-wearing during flu season.
  • N95 fit testing required within 1 year of start and updated annually; onsite testing allowed if prior testing not completed.
  • Infection Control Policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start required by agency standards (not necessarily by facility).

Additional Requirements

  • Unit-specific skills checklist required and must be updated annually.
  • Copy of resume or employment application required.
  • References and documentation must use legal name matching RN license and certifications exactly (no nicknames or maiden names unless legal name change proof provided).
  • Address on ID/license must match records; Ohio driver’s license address must be more than 60 miles from facility to avoid being considered local.
