Registered Nurse (OR) - Contract

Location: New York, NY
Shift: Day Shift, 7 AM – 5 PM (10 hours/day, 4 days/week)
Contract Length: 9 weeks


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality perioperative nursing care in the Operating Room (OR) setting, applying nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice to a designated patient population.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care using Relationship Centered Care principles and the nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and evaluate care plans.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered practices such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, and Discharge Wrap Up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate patient concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Implement high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Escalate safety hazards following institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance improvement.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management to ensure adequate resources.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages as needed.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support a positive environment for clinical colleagues, patients, and families.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
  • Demonstrate professional communication and ethical decision-making.
  • Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Participate in specialty practice councils, nursing committees, and unit initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
  • Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, including scrub and circulate roles, with OR experience within the last year.
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Experience in Ophthalmology, ENT Surgery, and Plastic Surgery.
