Registered Nurse (ICU RN) - Texas, Bay City

Contract Details

• Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Days, 12-hour shifts (7 AM - 7 PM)
• Schedule: 5 days on / 5 days off, then 2 days on / 2 days off rotation
• Hours per week: 36 (facility does not guarantee 36 hours weekly)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holidays: Every other holiday

Unit & Patient Care

• Unit Type: ICU with 6 beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • 2:1 standard
  • 3:1 for low acuity (stepdown patients)
  • 1:1 for high acuity patients
• Common Diagnoses: Atrial fibrillation (Afib), rapid ventricular response (RVR), sepsis, respiratory failure, severe anemia, GI bleeds, lower acuity trauma, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), fresh total joint replacements
• Ventilator: Puritan Bennett 840
• Drips Administered: Cardiac meds, sedation, antiarrhythmics, Sandostatin, insulin
• Charge Nurse Role: Yes, includes patient load
• Floating: MedSurg or ER depending on traveler experience; ER patients assigned if traveler is experienced in ER

Orientation & Training

• Floor-specific orientation: 2 days
• Health education/testing modules required prior to start (time varies per individual)
• Must be very competent with ventilators or capable of being educated on them

Staffing & Support

• No nurse aides routinely assigned unless needed for 1:1 care
• No telemetry/monitor techs; nurses monitor their own patients
• Respiratory Therapist coverage: 6 AM - 9 PM, then on-call; nurses must intervene if patient deteriorates
• Pharmacy coverage: 6 AM - 9 PM; house supervisor mixes meds after hours, pharmacist on call
• IV Team: No, but PICC team available if needed
• Hospitalist coverage: 12 hours/day plus call; ER physician in-house 24/7

Certifications & Requirements

• Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS (must have PALS in hand to start), TNCC
• Preferred: NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Experience: Prefer 2-3 years ICU experience
• Scrub Colors Allowed: Grey, navy blue, or black

Additional Notes

• All ICU patients are managed on one unit; major medical issues are transferred out except stroke patients (TPA administered in-house)
• Limited return to orientation (RTO)
• No block scheduling
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license for Texas
• ACLS, BLS, PALS certifications (PALS required before start)
• Minimum 2-3 years ICU nursing experience preferred
• Competency or willingness to be trained on ventilator management
