Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-7p, 7p-11p, 11p-7a, 7p-7a)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Self-scheduling: Yes
Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, and Medical-Surgical (MedSurg)
Level of Care: PCU, Oncology, MedSurg
Number of Beds: 27-28
Patient Population: Adults
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- Med/Surg: 1:5 (days), 1:5-6 (nights)
Nursing Assistant Support: Yes
Charge Nurse: Yes
Additional Unit Support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
Scrubs: Navy Blue
Patient Diagnoses & Care Focus
- Oncology (from diagnosis to remission or end-of-life care)
- Trauma
- Mixed PCU and MedSurg patient population
Required Certifications & Competencies
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Oncology certification preferred but not required (e.g., chemotherapy certification)
- ONS/ONCC certification preferred
- Competency with ventilators and hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000) – training provided in real time
- Experience with ICP monitoring
- EMR system: EPIC
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Specialty equipment: Lyko lifts and other lift equipment
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- Oncology and PCU experience preferred
- Charge nurse experience requires minimum 1 year
- First-time travel nurses are welcome (no prior travel experience required)
Clinical Skills & Responsibilities
- Care for oncology and trauma patients
- Administer chemotherapy, heparin, cardizem, protonix, and other common drips/medications
- RN may be required to titrate drips such as insulin and cardizem occasionally
- Float to MedSurg and PCU units at the same level of care
Orientation & Training
- 2 days of orientation provided
- Pass/fail open book exam on skills during orientation (90% required to pass)
Additional Information
- Driver’s license required at submission to verify distance from facility (radius rule: 50 miles)
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
- Focus on teamwork, cultural sensitivity, and patient respect
- Emphasis on hourly rounding and patient experience
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related health system facilities within the radius
