Anchorage is a unique city surrounded by 5,000-foot-high peaks in the south-central part of Alaska along the Cook Inlet, where abundant salmon and whales swim through. It's filled with cultural sites, including many museums and the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which offers stage performances and displays traditional crafts and replicas of dwellings from indigenous groups in the area. Outdoor activities are plentiful, including hiking and fishing within the city’s borders but only minutes from downtown is Chugach State Park, a 9,000-square-mile park with spectacular terrain for hiking, biking, ATV rides, kayaking, rafting and fishing. Nearby at Beluga Point, watch for the famous white whales that look like they sport permanent grins.
