Job Opportunity: CVICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with critical care experience for a Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) travel assignment. The role involves caring for complex cardiac patients including fresh heart surgeries and patients requiring advanced cardiac support devices.


Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of current CVICU experience required.
  • SICU experience may be considered with initial CVICU training.
  • First-time travelers are accepted (prior travel experience not required).

Patient Population & Care Environment

  • Patient mix includes fresh heart surgery patients (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR), ventilated patients, chest tubes, lumbar drains, and patients with chronic and acute renal failure.
  • Experience with devices such as Impella, IABP, and CRRT using Prismax or fresh heart cases is mandatory.
  • Required skills include post-op open heart recovery, Swan-Ganz catheter, Flotrack, temporary pacers, arterial lines, and chest tubes.

Staffing & Scheduling

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:1 or 1:2, may vary if floated.
  • Floating required to all ICUs, PACU, Emergency Department (ED) for ICU holding patients, and Intermediate Care (IMC) units.
  • Every other weekend and holiday coverage required as applicable.
  • Time off or schedule accommodations must be approved prior to offer.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale Certification)

Licensure

  • Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for New Jersey.

Additional Requirements

  • Must have experience with advanced cardiac monitoring and support devices.
  • Must be able to float to multiple critical care and emergency units.
  • Compliance with all required background checks, drug screening, and health documentation including TB testing, immunizations, and physical exam.
  • Fit testing and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and education modules required.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history required.
  • Two professional references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
  • Completion of competency exams including medication/pharmacology, EKG/dysrhythmia, IV therapy, and pass/fail testing as applicable.
  • Annual and contract-specific continuing education units (CEUs) required, including stroke and trauma CEUs for critical care staff.
  • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start required.

Notes

  • Locals are accepted for this position.
  • Floating policy must be acknowledged and completed for every new assignment.
  • Candidates must comply with all health and safety protocols including OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission training.
  • Candidates with a history of positive TB test must complete additional medical clearance.
  • Candidates must complete respiratory clearance and fit testing on-site prior to starting assignment.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey
  • Minimum 2 years of CVICU experience, with CVICU experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • IV Certification
  • NURSYS verification
  • Successful completion of pass/fail competency testing including EKG and medication/pharmacology exams
  • Basic EKG exam proficiency
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with advanced cardiac support devices including Impella, IABP, and CRRT using Prismax
  • Experience with fresh heart surgery cases
  • Post-operative open heart recovery experience
  • Proficiency with Swan-Ganz catheter management
  • Experience with Flotrack monitoring system
  • Experience managing temporary pacers
  • Experience with arterial lines (A-lines)
  • Experience managing chest tubes
