Pediatric OR Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - California, Orange


Position Overview

  • Role: Pediatric Operating Room Registered Nurse
  • Setting: Inpatient and outpatient pediatric patients (adults on rare occasions)
  • Environment: Fast-paced procedure center with minor surgical cases including ENT, Plastics, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Urology, Dentistry, Oncology
  • Schedule Options:
    • 4x10 hour shifts (6:00 AM - 4:30 PM)
    • 5x8 hour shifts with variable start times between 6:00 AM and 4:30 PM
  • Call Requirement: Yes, 5 weekdays and 2 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Weekend Coverage: Required
  • Documentation System: Surginet (Cerner)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in general surgery or related specialties (acute or outpatient experience accepted if majority specialty experience is met)
  • EMR experience required and must be verified
  • Strong skills in fast-paced environments
  • Candidate should have experience in the majority of the listed specialties
  • Willingness to train in endoscopy if needed

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse license for California (paperless system; no physical copy required)

Additional Requirements

  • Prior travel experience: Not accepted for first-time travelers (first timers not accepted)
  • Call and weekend shifts required; no float requirement
  • Must complete pre-start orientation modules and facility-specific onboarding
  • Must comply with facility dress code and fingernail hygiene policy (no artificial nails, natural nails ≤ ¼ inch, fresh chip-free polish)
  • Must complete required health screenings and immunizations (see Health Requirements)

Health Requirements

  • Negative TB test (IGRA or 2-step PPD within 60 days of start) or valid documentation for past positive with clear chest X-ray
  • Tdap vaccine required (TD or Dtap not acceptable)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug test within 60 days of start (instant drug screens not accepted)
  • Mask fit testing required prior to start (specific mask types accepted)
  • Visual acuity exam and color blind exam required (in-person only)
  • COVID vaccines preferred but not mandatory

Onboarding & Documentation

  • Proof of eligibility for employment (I9)
  • Valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport)
  • Background checks including criminal, education verification, and federal exclusions within 60 days of start
  • Verification of highest applicable degree or diploma
  • References: 2 supervisor references required (charge RN or floor supervisor acceptable)
  • Work history verification: Minimum 2 previous employers, up to 7 years of relevant experience, must be complete prior to start
  • Unit-specific skills checklist signed and dated
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation checklists and acknowledgments (e.g., HIPAA, safety manual, non-disclosure agreement, standards of conduct, mission/vision/values)
  • Pyxis access request form completion prior to start
  • Radiation badge required for this unit; new badges supplied by client

Orientation & Training

  • Online modules assigned prior to orientation; must be completed by specified deadlines before starting clinical work
  • Orientation includes virtual and in-person components; candidates must be local or able to report to campus for unit orientation
  • Additional NICU education acknowledgments required if applicable

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
  • Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Operating Room (OR) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Minimum 2 years of acute care or outpatient experience
  • Experience in general surgery and the following pediatric surgical specialties:
    • ENT Surgery
    • Plastic Surgery
    • Ophthalmology
    • Urology
    • Oncology
