Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - NICU

Location: Covington, Louisiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) position. The role involves attending deliveries, managing newborn care, and coordinating with the healthcare team to provide comprehensive neonatal support.


Required Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the specialty (NICU)
  • Delivery attendance experience required
  • Epic electronic health record experience required
  • No first-time travelers accepted

Patient Care & Unit Information

  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 2-3 patients
  • Float requirement: Yes, may float to Newborn Observation Unit (NOU) with ratios of 1:4-6
  • Expected to float to normal newborn nursery
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: At least 1 major and 1 minor holiday
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling with every other weekend obligation; holiday coverage as noted

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Skills & Responsibilities

  • Attend deliveries (vaginal and cesarean sections)
  • Assist with newborn transition and care, including admission and discharge of neonates to/from NICU and NOU
  • Coordinate care with Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, physicians, social services, respiratory therapy, radiology, occupational therapy, and others
  • Educate and update parents; assist new mothers with breastfeeding
  • Placement of IVs in neonates and drawing labs
  • Management of ventilators and central lines
  • Administration of medications via multiple routes (IV, IM, SQ, ETT, OGT, NGT, oral, rectal, topical)
  • Blood administration

Procedures Performed

  • Assist with chest tube insertion, PICC, UAC, and UVC placement
  • Assist with x-rays, capillary blood gases (CBG), arterial blood gases (ABG), ultrasounds, echocardiograms, EEGs
  • Intubation and oxygen administration
  • Nitric oxide administration
  • Exchange transfusions

Additional Information

  • Scrubs color: Grape/Purple
  • Must demonstrate compassion, empathy, and strong customer service skills
  • Experienced level III NICU nurse preferred

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID matching all documentation
  • Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations and health documents including:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per protocol
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption/declination
  • Annual competency exams including medication, pharmacology, and other nursing competencies
  • State nursing license verification within 30 days of start
  • Employment application with 7 years of work history and no gaps over 30 days

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Louisiana
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 3 years of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Delivery attendance experience
  • One completed travel assignment (no first-time travelers)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Experience managing ventilators
  • Experience assisting with chest tube insertion, PICC placement, and UVC placement
  • Experience with capillary blood gases (CBG) and arterial blood gases (ABG)
  • Experience assisting with ultrasounds and electroencephalograms (EEG)
  • Intubation experience
  • Experience administering nitric oxide

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is required; no first-time travelers will be considered.
  • Weekend and holiday coverage is mandatory as specified.
  • Self-scheduling with some flexibility but with required coverage commitments.
