Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Neuro PCU
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in neurological patients
- Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Patient Population: Adult neurological patients including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, epilepsy monitoring, and neuro-specific diagnoses
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4–5 (travelers must be comfortable with up to 1:5)
- Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset
Required Qualifications
Licensure
- Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
- Rapid Response and isolation precautions
Experience
- Accepts first-time travelers (no prior travel experience required)
Scheduling and Documentation Requirements
- Charting experience with EPIC required
- All requests for time off must be submitted with application
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Various background checks and verifications required, including:
- 7-year background check
- Education verification (highest earned degree)
- State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification
- Drug screening (negative 10-panel within 30 days of start)
- Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
- Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Immunizations or positive titers for measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, varicella
- Required to complete facility-specific compliance and orientation paperwork prior to start

- Locals accepted with radius rule applied
- Must provide valid Driver’s License/State ID within 48 hours of signing
- Two clinical references required
