Registered Nurse – Medical Oncology (Night Shift) – Travel/Contract
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Night shift position (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient population: Adults and Geriatrics
- Unit cares for all solid tumor cancers including breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, and esophageal cancers, as well as patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy
- Focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- Staffing ratio goal: 1:4 (can be up to 1:5)
- Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units required
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted for final schedule balancing
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday–Friday dayshift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Telemetry interpretation and monitoring skills
- EPIC system experience preferred
- ONS Chemotherapy certification preferred but not required
- Prior travel nursing experience preferred but not required
Patient Diagnoses & Care Focus
- Solid tumor cancers across the cancer journey: diagnosis, treatment, and end-of-life care
- Management of true medical-surgical issues alongside oncology care
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific codes apply)
- Education verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA accreditation required)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer
- Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31)
- Annual background and compliance training including Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training
- Fingerprinting must be completed prior to start; results reviewed including any hits or dismissed charges
Competency and Testing Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exam required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
Additional Notes
- Candidates must provide 2 professional references, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership role
- Dress code and hand hygiene policies must be reviewed and signed
- Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting Mechanism form required
- Floating to other oncology med-surg units expected
- No annual renewal of background check required by client, but agency requires annual background check for direct candidates
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized oncology unit with a focus on solid tumor cancers, providing comprehensive care from diagnosis through treatment and end-of-life support. The role requires strong telemetry skills, experience with EPIC charting, and a commitment to infection prevention and patient safety.

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
