Job Description
- Assess and respond to patients' physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs; act as patient advocate.
- Set up operating room with appropriate sterile supplies and equipment according to assignments and schedule.
- Collaborate with scrub nurse/technician, anesthesia personnel, and surgeon to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient care environment.
- Identify patient and operative site per policy; safely transport patients; communicate information accurately to surgical team and document timely.
- Maintain sterile field throughout surgical procedures.
- Chart required patient information, verify consent and history & physical (H&P) for each procedure, and perform surgical "time out."
- Oversee sponge, needle, and instrument counts before and during surgery; report results to surgeon.
- Manage medications on sterile field, ensuring proper labeling and use.
- Handle specimens safely and correctly, including labeling and documentation.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling waste and soiled items; ensure team compliance.
- Function as float/resource nurse when needed: maintain communication, relieve personnel for breaks, assist with case carts, manage patient flow, and optimize staff utilization.
- Review surgeon preference cards periodically to ensure availability of specific supplies and equipment.
- Independently learn and familiarize with equipment, procedures, supplies, drugs, and their storage locations.
- Be familiar with anesthesia supplies, crash cart, malignant hyperthermia (MH) cart, anesthesia emergency carts, and airway equipment (endotracheal tubes, LMAs, endoscopes).
- Utilize supplies and resources cost-effectively without compromising patient care; participate in annual inventory counts and accurate supply decrementing.
- Assist with housekeeping duties as necessary (making beds, mopping floors between cases, disposing of trash).
- Perform other duties as required (e.g., Phase 2 nurse, late nurse) and work in other patient areas as needed with appropriate skill levels.
