Job Details
- Specialty: NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), Level 3
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour shifts (07:00-19:30, 19:00-07:30)
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling with block scheduling allowed
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend for day shift; night shift weekends are flexible and based on facility needs (Friday and Saturday nights)
- Holiday Requirement: Assist with coverage as needed
- Call Requirement: No current call or standby requirement
- Floating: Travelers are first to float; may float to PICU, PIC, Pediatrics, Nursery, sitter, behavioral health, or adult units as needed
Unit Information
- Beds: 60 total private rooms, expandable to 65; 40 designated NICU rooms, 20 intermediate care
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: NICU 1:1-3; Intermediate NIC 1:3-4
- Charge Nurse: Present on each shift; takes patient assignments only if staffing gaps exist
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Patient Care Techs: Used on unit, no specific ratio
- Neonatologist Coverage: In-house 24/7 with 2-3 Advanced Practice Nurses and Resident/Fellow coverage
- Monitoring: All patients monitored with Phillips monitors; no telemetry techs; RNs do not read their own strips
Patient Population & Care
- Common Diagnoses: Premature infants (22 weeks and up), abdominal defects, pre-cardiac repair, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), genetic defects
- Equipment: Conventional ventilators, oscillator ventilator, JET ventilator, CPAP, nasal IMV, heated high flow, tracheostomy care
- RN Responsibilities: Titrate drips per orders (Fentanyl, Morphine, Precedex), troubleshoot respiratory equipment
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Licensure: Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- Certifications: BLS (AHA), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Experience: Preferred Level 3/4 ICU experience and micro preemie care
- Drug Screening: Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation: 1-2 days of unit-specific orientation (1 day NIC, 1 day NICU)
- Dress Code: No specific scrub color required; no fake nails, nail polish, jewelry, or watches allowed
