Registered Nurse (RN) – Acute Care
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Fri/Sat for night shift)
Holiday Requirement: Rotated holidays
Unit Details
- Acute Care unit with 29 beds (typical census 22-26, target 25)
- Mix of private and semi-private rooms
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
- Nights: 5-6 patients per nurse
- Patient population includes a wide range of medical diagnoses such as GI bleeds, sepsis, cellulitis, CHF, COVID, comfort measures, osteomyelitis, elderly fall patients, DVT, pulmonary embolisms
- Patients may leave for surgery/procedures and return to the unit
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips (Heparin only)
- Oxygen support up to 6L NC, stable BiPAP/CPAP at night or PRN; no ventilators on unit
- Telemetry patients monitored remotely by telemetry department; unit uses primarily Phillips monitors
- RNs read their own telemetry strips
- Charge Nurse coverage 24/7, goal is for Charge RN to be free of patient assignment
- 24/7 Crisis RN coverage and administrative supervisor available as resource
- Patient Care Tech (PCT) coverage 24/7 with a ratio of 1:10
- RNs expected to attempt IV starts; inpatient phlebotomy team available for blood draws
- Floating: Travel RNs float first to other med/surg-like units; no ICU or chemo patient care
Orientation & Training
- 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation provided
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Requirements & Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- BLS certification required
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus)
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility
- Scrub dress code: Any color scrubs allowed; staff must provide their own; no pediatric scrubs
Additional Notes
- No call or standby requirements
- Shift report at shift change (7:00 AM and 7:00 PM)
- No penalty or pay required for call off equivalent to 12 hours every 13 weeks
This position is suitable for RNs with acute care experience who are comfortable managing a variety of medical diagnoses, titrating heparin drips, and working night shifts with rotating weekends and holidays.
