Job Opportunity: Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA)

Job Overview

• Work in the Operating Room (OR) with an average of 28 cases per day, including same-day surgery (SDS) cases.
• Main OR has 14 suites.
• Typical cases include orthopedic, neuro spine, total joints, open fractures, general surgery, and ENT. No open heart cases; vascular cases starting soon.
• Ratio: 1 Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) per OR.
• Use of EPIC electronic medical record system.
• Scrubs provided for RNs and OR Techs.
• No floating; floor-specific orientation includes 3 shifts.
• No self-scheduling for travelers; block scheduling possible if it meets unit needs.
• Call requirements include weekend and weeknight rotations with 12- and 24-hour shifts; call response time is 20 minutes.
• No holiday shifts regularly scheduled, but holiday call coverage as needed.
• No IV team; Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7.
• Pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell system.
• Anesthesia interprets telemetry strips; RNs not required to interpret.
• Ventilators are used; RT manages vent patients in OR and PACU.
• Charge nurse coverage from 7am to 7pm.
• OR techs assist with room turnover and other responsibilities; no housekeeping or aides.

Required Qualifications

• Current BLS certification (AHA).
• Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) credential via NBSTSA.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential via NBSTSA.
• Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Assistant program.
• Minimum 1 year of experience as a Certified Surgical First Assist.
• Must have completed 2-3 previous travel assignments.
• Experience and proficiency assisting in orthopedic cases preferred.
• Prior travel experience is required.
• Must disclose any license issues at time of submission.
• Driver’s license address must be outside a 50-mile radius from the facility.

Additional Information

• Call shifts vary:

  • Weekday call: 7pm-7am or 7pm-11pm
  • Weekend call: 7am-7pm, 7pm-7am, 7pm-11pm, or 7am-7am
• Weekend call shifts can be 12-24 hours due to two teams on call.
• Candidates must adhere to submission rules limiting applications to one position at a time.
• Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying.
• Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after a full year assignment.
• Travel teams must be submitted together.
• Only two candidates submitted per opening; additional submissions held if position is full.
