Overview

• Travel contract for an experienced ICU nurse in California
• Contract length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Days, 12 hours per day, 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

• 2 full years of ICU experience
• Active BLS
• Active ACLS
• Active NIHSS
• Active California RN license

Preferred Qualifications

• CCRN
• Basic critical care course

Unit Details

• Unit: ICU
• 20 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2
• EMR: Cerner
• Scrub color: Navy

Schedule and Staffing

• Weekend requirement: 2 weekends per 4 weeks
• Holidays: per unit needs
• Charge nurse does not take patients and serves as a resource to the house
• No nurse aides
• RT 24/7
• Pharmacy 24/7
• Internal medicine is in house 24/7; pulmonologist acts as intensivist but is not 24/7

Floating and Patient Care

• Floats to tele and med surg
• Travelers are first to float
• May be deployed to ED to care for boarded ICU patients or work in ICU while on standby
• Must be comfortable floating to the floors and taking a full patient load
• May take 4 or 5 patients when floated
• Must have strong IV skills
• Must be comfortable with ABCDE bundle and vents

Common Patient Population

• Sepsis
• DKA
• Hyperglycemia
• PN
• COPD
• PCI cardiac services
• CVA
• ICU patients recovering from surgery
• GI bleeds

Additional Notes

• Tele nurses must read and interpret their own strips
• Vents are managed by RT
• Floor-specific orientation includes 2 ICU shifts and 1 unit out on the floor
