Registered Nurse – Emergency Department

Location: Brooklyn, New York
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night shift (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), 3 days per week plus every other weekend required
Hours per Day: 11
Hours per Week: 34.5


Job Summary

  • Provide direct patient care using the nursing process.
  • Prescribe, delegate, and coordinate care for assigned patients.
  • Deliver care according to established nursing standards, hospital policies, and multidisciplinary procedures.
  • Diagnose and treat human responses to actual and potential health problems through case finding, health teaching, counseling, and supportive/restorative care.
  • Supervise care provided by LPNs, RNs on permit, nursing attendants, technicians, and supplemental staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assess immediate and ongoing care needs of patients and their significant others.
  • Develop comprehensive, current care plans addressing physical, psychosocial, spiritual, teaching, and discharge needs.
  • Provide direct patient care based on assessments and medical regimens.
  • Oversee all aspects of patient care and supervise other nursing personnel within scope of practice.
  • Observe, evaluate, document, and communicate patient responses to illness and treatments.
  • Ensure timely reassessment and follow-up when patient condition or diagnosis changes.
  • Coordinate nursing interventions to align with medical regimens.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to establish care priorities and ensure timely care delivery.
  • Integrate age-specific care needs (e.g., pediatrics, geriatrics) into care plans.
  • Accept accountability for nursing interventions and outcomes based on clinical judgment.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities related to patient care and nursing standards.
  • Communicate effectively, manage stress, and facilitate interdisciplinary relationships.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in orientation of nursing staff.
  • Assume charge nurse responsibilities as delegated.
  • Assist and relieve co-workers; work on other units as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for student nurses.
  • Engage in meetings, committees, conferences, and educational programs.
  • Participate in nursing research and pilot projects.
  • Pursue continuing professional growth and education, including staff development, continuing education, and advanced nursing degrees.
  • Participate in professional and community organizations.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Emergency Department (ED) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with Level 1 or Level 2 Trauma patients
  • Experience in an Acute Care setting
  • Competency in ventilator and tracheostomy tube management
  • Competency in gastrostomy tube management
  • Competency in medication titration
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • American Heart Association Stroke Certification (AHA Stroke Certification)
