Registered Nurse (RN) – MS/Telemetry Float Pool

Location: Garden City, Kansas (Zone 4)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 48 hours per week

Job Overview

• Float pool position covering multiple units within a 60-mile radius around Garden City, KS.
• Units include Medical-Surgical Telemetry (MS-Tele) and specialties such as Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Trauma, Emergency Department Observation, and more.
• No home base facility; travelers must be prepared to float across all facilities in Zone 4.
• Facilities within the zone include hospitals up to 54 miles from Garden City.
• Schedules are released 4–6 weeks in advance and may follow either:

  • Assignment to a single facility for the week with possible floating within that facility.
  • Just-In-Time (JIT) assignments where the facility is assigned 1–2 hours before shift start.
• Weekend requirement: 6–9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule.
• Holiday rotation participation may be required.
• Call or standby is rare and only for low census situations.
• Charge nurses are designated on each unit and typically do not take patient assignments unless necessary.

Patient Population & Care

• Adult to geriatric patients with a variety of diagnoses including:

  • Cardiac, Neurological, Orthopedic, Oncology, Renal, Urology (post-surgical), General Surgery (post-appendectomy), Gynecology, Psychiatry/Detox, ENT, General Medicine, and stable long-term placement patients.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on acuity.
• Nurses are required to titrate heparin drips.
• Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP are used on units.
• Telemetry monitoring is part of the unit care; RNs read cardiac strips.

Required Qualifications

• Current RN license valid in Kansas.
• Minimum of 2 years of Medical-Surgical Telemetry nursing experience within the last 3 years.
• ACLS (American Heart Association), BLS (American Heart Association), and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required.
• Prior neuro experience preferred.
• Experience with Alaris infusion pumps and EPIC electronic medical records preferred.
• Must be able to float across multiple units and facilities within the 60-mile zone.
• Must be physically and logistically prepared to travel and obtain housing that allows floating throughout the zone.
• All time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment.
• Clinicians must be in-state for the week of orientation, even if some orientation modules are completed remotely.

Additional Information

• Orientation week attendance in-state is mandatory.
• Floating assignments may include ICU (low acuity holds within skillset), PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele units.
• Schedules are created by leadership and travelers are expected to be flexible to fill gaps in permanent staffing.
• Nurse aides are available on units to assist with patient care.

This position is ideal for experienced MS-Tele RNs who are adaptable, comfortable with floating across multiple specialties and facilities, and able to work night shifts with weekend and holiday rotations.
