Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Schedule & Work Conditions
- 12-hour shifts, one shift per day
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Rotates with general unit staff; only assigned to skills nurse is competent in if floated outside general unit
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
Required Certifications & Skills
- Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
- BLS (AHA) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience titrating drips, including heparin drip based on PTT
Additional Notes
- Charge nurse present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
- House supervisor present 24/7
- Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios:
- Day/evening: 1:9-10
- Night: 1:10-12
- Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required
Summary
This is a 13-week contract for an experienced Neuro Med-Surg RN with trauma and neuro unit experience. Prior travel nursing experience is mandatory. The role involves managing complex neurological patients with titratable drips and working within a structured team environment with defined nurse-to-patient ratios.
