Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg Ortho Trauma

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 12-hour shifts, day and night coverage available
Schedule:

• Day shift: 06:30 AM – 07:00 PM
• Night shift: 06:30 PM – 07:00 AM
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
• Limited block scheduling available for travelers
• Floating required to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds

Unit Details

• Department: Med Tele / Ortho RN - 4th Floor North & South
• Number of beds: 55
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6
• Nurse aids/patient care techs ratio: 1:10-20
• Tele/Monitor techs present; RNs expected to have tele awareness but techs interpret strips
• Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
• Mechanical lifts available in every other room
• Focus on hourly rounding and responsiveness
• High patient turnover with multiple discharges and admissions daily
• Patient population includes diverse cultures (Spanish, Karen, Burmese)

Common Patient Diagnoses

• Joint replacements
• Fractures
• Colon resections
• COPD exacerbations
• Prostatectomy
• Cellulitis
• Sepsis
• Ortho trauma
• GI bleeds
• Pneumonia
• Failure to thrive

Clinical Responsibilities

• Titrate drips: Heparin, lidocaine, ketamine
• Manage PCA pumps (common titratable/set rate drips)
• Must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book)
• Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation

Required Qualifications

• Current RN license for Nebraska
• BLS (AHA) required
• ACLS preferred
• Driver’s license required at submittal (used to verify candidate is outside 50-mile radius)
• Must comply with facility’s fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
• Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Additional Notes

• Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity) within a 50-mile radius
• Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days or less per 13-week contract; no additional RTO approvals
• Successful nurses on this unit are team players, have good attendance, are friendly, compassionate, and patient-focused
