Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract
Location: Lees Summit, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12-hour shifts (18:45 - 07:15)
- Patient Ratio: 1:5
- Experience Required: Minimum 1 year, 2 years preferred
- First-time Travelers: Accepted
- Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
- Floating: Regular floating between departments, units, and facilities as needed within scope of practice
- Charge RN Assignments: As needed
- On-call: Not required
- Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
- Pending License: Not accepted
- Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days
- Guaranteed Hours: Minimum 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred
Required Skills & Experience
- Work Settings: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry
- Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response:
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry monitoring on unit
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
- Genitourinary/Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV Therapy/Phlebotomy:
- Blood product administration
- Central line, peripheral line, PICC line care and management
- Starting IVs
- Medications: Heparin protocols, managing cardiac drips (no titration)
- Neurological/Psychiatric: Care for CVA, pre/post neurosurgery patients
- Plastics: Surgical drains management
- Respiratory:
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- Interpretation of ABGs
- Oxygen delivery devices (nasal cannula, face masks)
- Non-invasive airway management
- Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac
Preferred Skills
- Work Settings: ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
- IV Therapy: Accessing ports
- Medications: Managing vasoactive drips (no titration), PCA
- Neurological/Psychiatric: Traumatic brain injury care
- Orthopedics: Ortho trauma, total joint replacements
- Respiratory: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, tracheostomy management
Special Patient Population & Conditions
- Intermediate level of care patients including:
- Stroke, heart failure, suicidal ideation, alcohol withdrawal
- Respiratory failure, pneumonia, gastrointestinal bleeding, syncope, TIA, falls
- COVID-19, influenza, C. difficile infections
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- Post-surgical patients requiring higher level monitoring
- Renal failure, cardiac drips, heparin management
Charting System
- Epic
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required
- Professional license primary source verification (Missouri license verifiable on NURSYS)
- Drug testing within 1 year, must include full drug panel and be valid throughout assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year
- Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tdap (or declination)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency within 12 months
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
- Color blindness testing within 12 months
- Skills checklist within 1 year
- Various facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, hand hygiene, dress code, latex allergy questionnaire, and regulatory compliance education (completed annually)
- Background checks and state-specific searches as required by Missouri regulations
Additional Notes
- Floating between units and departments is expected
- No block scheduling accommodations
- Must complete required orientation and training modules prior to start
- References: Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year
- No prior travel experience explicitly required
This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 1 year of experience in telemetry or progressive care settings, comfortable with night shifts and weekend work, and willing to float as needed. Certification in BLS and NIHSS is required, with ACLS preferred. The role involves caring for complex patients requiring intermediate to high-level monitoring and management.
