Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Bloomington, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float position on an acuity adaptable unit with patient care levels ranging from Medical-Surgical (MS) to Progressive Care Unit (PCU)/Stepdown/ICU.
  • Patient ratios vary from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on acuity and patient type.
  • Unit is a boarding unit where patients come from the Emergency Department and are boarded until discharge or transfer to inpatient units. Patients are generally stable; unstable patients are moved out.
  • Float to inpatient PCU unit required; RN must have PCU experience.
  • Team nursing model with RN/LPN collaboration and delegation.
  • Unit size fluctuates between 4 beds and up to 8-10 beds depending on staffing and acuity.
  • Shift: 4x12 hour shifts.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • Cerner experience required.
  • On-call: Not required.
  • Locals not accepted.
  • First-time travelers not accepted.

Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience required.
  • PCU experience required due to float responsibilities.
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required (first timers not accepted).
  • Required certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Additional certifications that may be relevant or required depending on unit: PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, etc. (verify per unit).

Staffing & Ratios

  • Ratios typically 1:5-6.
  • Team nursing with RN/LPN or RN/CNA depending on acuity and staffing.

Scheduling & Hours

  • Guaranteed hours vary:
    • 8 and 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours = 36 hours/week
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours = 48 hours/week

System & Technology

  • Cerner electronic health record system experience required.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year work/lived history verification
    • SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma (official copies required).
  • State nursing license verification (within 30 days of start).
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required.
  • Unit competency exam required.
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators).
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination/documentation required (no declinations accepted)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles.
  • Employment application with full work history and explanation of gaps.
  • Skills checklist within 12 months and annually updated.

Additional Notes

  • Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, acuity-adaptable environment with fluctuating patient loads and team nursing.
  • Must be able to float between boarding unit and inpatient PCU unit.
  • Must be willing to work every other weekend and 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • First-time travel nurses are not accepted for this position.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with PCU background who are comfortable with team nursing and flexible patient acuity levels in a travel/contract role.
