Operating Room Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
- Shift: Alternate 4x10 hour shifts
- Day: 10:45 AM - 9:15 PM
- Night: 12:45 PM - 11:15 PM
- Hours per Week: 40 hours
- Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Magnet designated

- Parking: Permit required, no cost
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3 years of Operating Room nursing experience
- First-time travel nurses not accepted
- General OR and Trauma experience required
- Level I trauma experience required
- Must have experience with all service lines except Cardiovascular (CV)
- Required case experience includes:
- Bariatric: Laparoscopic assisted cases
- General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy, Whipple procedure
- Neurology: Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
- Orthopedic: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed and Open reduction of fractures
- Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
- Transplant: Organ donation
- Urology: Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy
- Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
- Emergency management skills: Code response, Fire safety, Latex allergy management, Malignant Hyperthermia
- Equipment experience: Electrosurgical units, Fiber optic light sources/cords, Hana tables
- Professional knowledge: Administration of blood products, Infection control, Radiation safety, Specimen handling/labeling, Universal Protocol (Time out) procedure, Urinary bladder catheterization
- Cerner experience preferred
Schedule & Work Conditions
- Weekend requirement: 1 weekend per month
- On-call: 1 per week (though infrequent)
- Floating: Rare, only within skill set
- Block scheduling: Not accommodated
- Must live at least 50 miles from facility to apply (no locals accepted)
- All requested time off must be approved by manager
- Guaranteed hours subject to client call-offs (up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay)
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Active Illinois RN license in hand or in application process required
- BLS certification required (AHA or RQI acceptable)
- CNOR certification preferred
- ACLS, PALS may be required based on unit/specialty (AHA or RQI acceptable)
Required Background & Compliance Checks
- Background check within 30 days of start covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
- Education verification required (official or unofficial transcripts accepted if pending)
- NURSYS verification required
- Competency exam required for all clinical candidates
- Illinois-specific searches including Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, and State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry within 30 days of start
- Illinois Healthcare Registry Worker fingerprinting required for clinical candidates without an IL state license; prints must be taken in Illinois 3 business days prior to start
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, confirming ability to perform job functions without restrictions
- Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted), not completed onsite
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start
- TB questionnaire updated annually
- Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
Additional Requirements
- Badge photo required within one week of contract signing
- Code of Conduct acknowledgment within 7 days of contract signing
- Parking permit form to be completed within 7 days of contract signing (if applicable)
- References: 2 professional references required for all direct travel clinical candidates
- Skills checklist required for all clinical candidates
This position offers a challenging and diverse surgical nursing experience in a high-acuity, Level I trauma center environment with a strong emphasis on trauma and general surgery cases. Candidates must meet strict licensure, certification, and compliance requirements and be prepared for alternating 10-hour shifts with on-call responsibilities.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience, with OR experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience working with Level I Trauma patients
