Neuro ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Charlotte, North Carolina


Job Summary

  • Position: Registered Nurse (Neuro ICU)
  • Location: Charlotte, NC
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Patient Population: Comprehensive Stroke Center with high volume of stroke patients (ischemic, hemorrhagic including SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents/endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, myasthenia gravis, and post-neurosurgery care.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: Typically 2:1, may flex to 3:1 during high census (nurse must be comfortable with this).
  • Average daily census: 11-12 patients
  • Float requirement: Yes
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Call requirement: None

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience, including experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Skills and clinical experience:
    • Ventilator management
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Blood product administration
    • Continuous IV sedation
    • CVA/Acute stroke management
    • External ventricular drains (EVD) and ICP monitoring
    • Post-neurosurgery patient management
    • Lumbar drain experience
    • Arterial line management

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours total (2 days or 2 nights)
  • Must pass EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start
  • Scrubs: Navy blue & white
  • Must complete required facility-specific education and compliance training prior to or at start

Patient Care Environment & Equipment

  • Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Special equipment used includes:
    • External Ventricular Drains (EVD)
    • Lumbar Drains (LD)
    • Camino ICP monitoring
    • LICOX, NICOM, Arctic Sun devices
  • Unit systems: Pyxis medication system, EPIC electronic health record, SBAR communication tool

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including:
    • Local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search
    • Education verification for highest degree earned relevant to nursing
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) required within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal
    • Hepatitis B: titer or vaccination series; facility-specific declination form if negative/equivocal
    • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • TB testing: Negative PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physical with TB questionnaire signed by physician
  • Must complete facility-specific confidentiality agreement, education roster, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and hospital policies acknowledgment

Additional Notes

  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
  • RTO allowed up to 7 days maximum for auto-offer candidates only
  • Candidates must be comfortable with potential 3:1 patient ratios during high census
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel acute care nurses
  • Employment application must be uploaded prior to start
  • Must complete medication safety training and competency exams as required
  • Facility-specific orientation and compliance modules may take 8-10 hours to complete for acute care candidates

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with strong critical care skills and prior travel contract experience, seeking a night shift travel assignment in a comprehensive stroke center environment.
