Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - SICU

Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours


Unit Overview

  • 20-bed Adult Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
  • Patient population includes post-major operations and those with complications requiring extensive physiological monitoring
  • Common diagnoses: peripheral vascular diseases, cancer, hepatic, pancreatic or renal failure, cardiac and pulmonary disease, multi-system failure
  • Advanced care includes Swan-Ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition, fluid and electrolyte management
  • Receives adult liver transplants and adult ECMO/respiratory failure patients
  • May receive overflow from Trauma, Neuro, Medicine, and Cardiac ICUs
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:2; may increase to 1:3 when caring for general care/telemetry or moderate care patients
  • Charge nurses participate as adult Rapid Response Providers
  • Comprehensive orientation and career development opportunities provided
  • Float requirement: all new employees expected to float to designated units during low census
  • Weekend schedule: every other weekend

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) experience
  • Emergency Department (ED) RN experience
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical record system

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSN degree
  • CCRN certification

Orientation and Training

  • Comprehensive orientation provided, including pass/fail competency testing (EKG/medication) for ICU units
  • Candidates must review an EKG study guide prior to start
  • Required to complete facility-specific orientation paperwork on the first day

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Flu vaccination required for the 2025-26 season (no exemptions allowed; egg-free vaccine available for allergies)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start date
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant drug screens not accepted)
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific approved mask models required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; if past positive TB, must have clear chest X-ray within 5 years and complete annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunization or positive titer documentation required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
    • Varicella

Compliance and Documentation

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Background checks including 7-year history, sex offender registry, nationwide checks, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG clearance required prior to start and updated annually
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • NURSYS verification for RN license required
  • Pass/fail testing acknowledgment required for ICU units
  • Facility-specific documents to review and sign prior to start include confidentiality agreement, code of conduct, conflict of interest disclosure, sexual harassment and misconduct policy, and cornerstone module attestation
  • ID proofing process must be completed before starting assignment
  • Badge and pager return required at assignment end to avoid fees

  • No call responsibilities
  • Orientation pay rate applies for first week (not included here)
  • Candidates accepted if first-time travelers (no prior travel experience required)
