Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to patients on a Medical Surgical Unit. Deliver care based on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on care planning and evaluation.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care practices (e.g., Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding).
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perception of care.
  • Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care; identify and escalate barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in process improvement, peer review, and quality initiatives.
  • Collaborate on quality improvement projects and nursing research.
  • Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Report safety hazards following institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
  • Escalate resource deficits appropriately.
  • Promote cost-effective patient care approaches.
  • Document thoroughly in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image demonstrating caring and empathy.

Requirements

  • Licensure: NYS Registered Nurse (RN) License required
  • Certifications: BLS required
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years RN experience
    • Minimum 2 years Medical Surgical nursing experience
  • Travel Experience: 1 year travel experience required for travel positions (not required for Per Diem)
  • Preferred: EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred

Unit Information

  • Average Unit Census: 30 patients
  • Unit Beds: 34
  • Staffing Ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
  • Schedule: 3x12 hour shifts, every other weekend and holidays required
