Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical

Location: Evansville, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 12-hour days (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
  • Overtime: Begins after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts
  • Float Requirement:
    • First to float within skillset
    • Possible float to nearby campuses (8 to 11 miles away) with 2-hour notice
    • Mid-shift float within same campus; cross-campus mid-shift float unlikely but possible
  • Weekend/Holiday Requirement:
    • Work three weekends every six weeks
    • Every other holiday
  • On Call/Call Back: Not required
  • Unit Info:
    • 41 beds
    • Nurse-to-patient ratio: Days 1:5-6; Nights 1:6-7
    • Charge nurse takes a patient assignment
  • Work Environment:
    • Teaching hospital; may require precepting students and new hires
    • Navy blue scrubs required; no competing health system or agency logos allowed
    • Positive unit culture with teamwork and celebrations

Patient Population & Clinical Skills

  • Post-surgical patients including: Whipples, vascular, pre/post heart catheterizations, bariatric, ENT, podiatry, open abdominal wounds
  • Patients with dementia, altered mental status, CIWA/detox protocols, fall risks, thyroid surgeries
  • Skills required:
    • PIV insertion
    • Chest tube and indwelling drain management
    • Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
    • Stable drips (heparin, lasix, protonix)
    • Epidural management
    • Ostomy care
    • Blood product administration
    • Telemetry interpretation
    • Wound care (packing, wound vacs, dressing changes)
    • Pre/post heart catheter care (femoral/TR bands, no interventions)
  • Strong assessment and critical thinking skills essential
  • Must be resilient, adaptable, and socially engaged

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of strong Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • At least 1 prior travel assignment completed
  • Trauma Level II experience required
  • Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required)
  • Current active compact RN license
  • Certifications: AHA BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Additional Information

  • No local candidates within a 40-mile radius will be considered
  • Bi-weekly orientation starting June 1
  • COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change)
  • Guaranteed hours may vary during orientation week and holidays when the unit is closed
