O.R. Technician (CST) - Contract Position

Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 9 weeks


Job Summary

A Surgical Technician (Certified Surgical Technologist - CST) assists in operating room procedures under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. The role involves supporting surgical teams by preparing the sterile field, handling instruments, and maintaining aseptic technique throughout surgical procedures.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving following aseptic principles.
  • Set up sterile instrument tables and prepare supplies based on the type of operation.
  • Assist in draping patients and operative areas.
  • Anticipate and provide instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies to the surgeon.
  • Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse.
  • Monitor and maintain aseptic technique, correcting contamination immediately.
  • Assist in specimen handling and disposition.
  • Apply dressings and secure drainage systems as needed.
  • Assist in patient transfer using approved devices.
  • Dispose of soiled materials properly and prepare instruments for reprocessing.
  • Support circulating nurse by assembling supplies and equipment before, during, and after surgery.
  • Position patients correctly and adjust surgical tables and accessories.
  • Observe and control operating room traffic to maintain sterile environment.
  • Assist in medication preparation under direct RN supervision (excluding narcotics).
  • Label medications clearly and communicate medication details audibly during surgery.
  • Assist in transportation of patients to and from the surgical suite.
  • Help maintain organization of operating room and sterile storage areas.
  • Update preference cards and notify CNM of changes in instrumentation or equipment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to assess patients and surgical environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse teams.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity for various surgical tasks.
  • Commitment to patient safety and consumer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required.
  • Certification in Operating Room Technology (CST) is required.
  • Experience in an operating room setting preferred.
  • Courses in operating room technology, science, biology, and chemistry are preferred.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to various clinical conditions, technologies, and environmental settings typical of surgical suites.
  • Per diem positions limited to no more than 16 shifts in 13 weeks.
