Job Summary

The Wound and Ostomy RN provides direct and indirect patient care in inpatient settings, specializing in wound and ostomy nursing. Responsibilities include comprehensive nursing assessments, planning and delivering individualized care, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and educating patients and families. The role involves managing wound care interventions such as dressing changes, Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) device assistance, and pressure injury management. The RN also participates in quality improvement and clinician education related to wound and skin care.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough patient assessments including history, observation, and physical examination
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
  • Administer complex wound and ostomy care techniques independently
  • Delegate and supervise nursing care in accordance with Nurse Practice Acts
  • Provide patient and family teaching on disease processes, self-care, and prevention of complications
  • Communicate patient progress effectively with healthcare team members
  • Use relevant equipment and modalities safely and skillfully
  • Anticipate and initiate preventive measures for potential nursing or medical problems
  • Assess nutritional status and collaborate with healthcare team accordingly
  • Maintain ethical nursing practice and respect patient cultural and spiritual beliefs
  • Establish effective interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and healthcare colleagues

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Wound Care Certification
  • Minimum of 1 year of wound care experience within the last year

Physical Demands

  • Standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, bending
  • Some repetitive motions
