Job Opportunity: Medical Laboratory Scientist
Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 26 weeks
Specialty
- Medical Laboratory Scientist with a strong Microbiology background preferred
- Active ASCP or AMT certification required
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of progressive clinical experience or 1 year hospital internship after degree
- Required specialty experience: 3 years (higher value taken from data)
- Prior travel experience: Not required
Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field
- Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification (AMT or ASCP)
Job Description
- Perform all levels of testing including CLIA-defined high complexity testing
- Work independently with advanced technical skills and seasoned judgment
- Provide 24-hour laboratory coverage including shift work, nights, and weekend call
- Work with diverse patient populations: infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics
- Handle complex technical problems and ensure quality control throughout testing process
- Write and update procedures using CLSI format
- Establish and maintain quality control programs and ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission standards
- Train new employees and provide ongoing education to staff
- Assist laboratory manager with competency evaluations, process improvements, and regulatory inspections
- Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory levels
- Provide limited test utilization and interpretation information to medical and nursing staff
- Troubleshoot and resolve inconsistencies in patient results
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of laboratory testing, LIS operation, equipment use, and quality control
- Ability to interpret lab reports and troubleshoot problems
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and maintain accuracy in test results
- Ability to train staff and support continuing education
